Pre-ejaculate is a fluid that doesn't necessarily contain a lot of sperm. And there is some evidence to suggest that any sperm that are present might be ineffective at causing pregnancy. (Note that those same studies, however, *also* show the presence of HIV - the virus that causes AIDS - in that same fluid.)


But there certainly can be live sperm in that fluid, and it *is* possible to get pregnant from it. So, to answer your question, sperm ejaculated into a woman's vagina remain alive in the mucus of the cervix and are able to fertilize an egg for three to five days. Sperm ejaculated outside the body usually live only a few hours.
