Only enlisted personnel in the United States military branches are generally bound to a specific service requirement, which is at this time eight years (at least four of active duty, and the balance of inactive reserve service).

Officers in the U.S. military generally serve at their pleasure and may resign their commissions at any time... though deployed personnel must of course wait for the end of their current tour.

The exception to this rule is when specific training is tied to a service commitment. For example, an officer who received four years of tuition through a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program, will be required to 'repay' this through a specified number of years of service, typically four years, after which they would serve until they resign. Another excellent example is for other expensive and lengthy training, such as pilot training.

Another exception is that sometimes accepting a promotion (notably to O-4/Major) may require a service commitment. It is for this reason that there are occasional situations where an officer may request being passed over for promotion, or refuse one awarded.

These regulations change with time, and one's officer recruiter should be consulted for specific current regulations.

The Basic School which is attended after commissioning is a 26 week essential element to becoming a Marine Officer. They make an effort to assimilate a wide array of young American men into a cohesive cadre of well trained Marines into combat leaders. They attempt to remove the rough edges of country hicks, eliminate aristocratic snobbishness and end the Dictatorship of the "Ring Knockers". Of Course, they do not end the course as social equals. but they truly become a Band of Brothers.

The term is four years, which may be extended by four years. From the U.S. Code Title 10, Section 5043(a)(1):

The Commandant shall be appointed for a term of four years from the general officers of the Marine Corps... In time of war or during a national emergency declared by Congress, he may be reappointed for a term of not more than four years

How long does it take to become a Marine Officer?

If you have a 4 year degree all you have to do is go to Officer Candidate School (OCS) which is 10 weeks long. At the end of OCS you will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. OCS is designed to see if you have what it takes to be a Marine officer. After receiving your commission you then attend The Basic School for a 26 week course, followed by assignment to an Occupational Specialty and training in the selected field. If you are still in college you can sign up to go to OCS during the summer between semesters but you cannot commission until you have the 4 year degree. So this path could take a few years depending on what year of school you are in. Call 716-633-1406
