You can determine that a melon is ripe by a few factors the bottoms become yellow, the tendril (looks like pigtail) near the melon stem dries up and the fruit gives a dull thump when knocked. So long as you are not competing with critters let the fruit sit on the vine a few extra days to insure it is ripe. Fruits keep very well on the vine once mature (about 10 days).
