Television has been around since 1925. It was then that Scottish inventor John Logie Baird demonstrated the first television system to the public. His system was an electro-mechanical device that used a spinning disc to create a moving image. It was used for the very first public broadcasts in 1929 by the BBC in London.

Across the Atlantic, Philo Farnsworth was also working on similar systems, as was Vladimir Zworykin. Farnsworth carried out his first demonstration of another electro-mechanical system in 1927 but two years later, he had eliminated the moving parts and therefore is credited with the first person to produce a fully electronic television system. (Some sources say Zworykin did the same, around 1928 for RCA in New York -- he was on the east coast, and Farnsworth was on the west coast, but both were experimenting with electronic, rather than mechanical TV.) It should also be noted that another American inventor, Charles Francis Jenkins, did experiments with mechanical TV in the mid-1920s; several stations used his system in the late 1920s before it became obvious that mechanical means of transmission were not practical.

By the mid 1930s, the BBC had given up on Baird's system, which had never overcome problems with poor-quality images, and replaced it with a fully electronic version, which was far superior in the quality of the pictures. Baird and Farnsworth worked together in a bid to use their new system, but the BBC chose a competitive system. The BBC first went on the air with regular programming in 1936 (the opening song was "Magic Rays of Light").

In America, scheduled public broadcasts did not start until 1939, at the New York World's Fair, where NBC debuted its WNBT-TV. This delay was partly due to additional development work by Farnsworth but legal challenges to patents were the major factor in preventing television from debuting sooner. But American TV did not really take off in availability and popularity till after World War II had ended; by 1947-1948, a number of stations in most major cities went on the air.

Television made its first appearance nearly a century ago. The first demonstration was carried out by John Logie Baird in 1925 at a London department store. In 1929, the BBC began broadcasting television using Baird's system. Although his "Televisor" system was replaced some 7 years later it represented the first public television system.

Polish inventor Jan Szczepanik patented a color television system in 1897, but it could not have worked as he described it, and he never made a working device.

John Logie Baird can be referred to as the father of color television
demonstrated the world's first color transmission on July 3, 1928
made the world's first color broadcast on February 4, 1938
gave the first demonstration of a fully electronic color picture tube on August 16, 1944

CBS gave the first demonstrations of color television to the general public, beginning January 12, 1950, to a series of receivers placed in public places.
CBS-Coloumbia distriubed the first color sets reaching retail stores on September 28, 1951

Pick your date of what you consider how old color television is.
