More than 6 years. Sony announced the specifications late in 2000, and it wasn't until 2005 that they had an actual system. At the rollout May16, 2005, the prototype was still non-functional. The version that went on sale November 11, 2006 (in Japan)included much less memory (20 Gb or 60 Gb) than later retail packages. It was released March 23, 2007 in Europe. As an aside, Sony lost money on every system sold through 2007, and did not expect to reach a net profit until sometime in 2009.

It takes about 1 hour or 2 to charge it at least for 30 minutes. It takes about 3 to 4 hours to fully charge it. It's disappointing how long it takes.... :(
