Ducks are pretty well self-sufficent from birth. They follow their mother around till she gets them to a pond then they tend to wander off.

Puppys need to be with their mother for 8 weeks before parting. If you give a very good loving home to the puppy then it wont miss its mother. It may miss it's mother for the first week or so but...
