Best Answer

For colleges and universities that operate on a regular semester system. One credit requires 16 hours of class contact time for the semester. This is typically broken down into one hour per week. Thus, a three credit course would require 48 hours of class contact time for the semester and usually broken down into three hours per week. A full-time student must enroll for a minimum of 12 credits per semester (12 hours of class contact time per week for the semester). The average student load is 15 credits per semester.

Basically, you get one credit (hour) for every 50 minutes in class.

So if a class is 3 credit hours and meets 3 times a week (normally MWF), that's pretty much 1 hr each day and if it is 3 credit hours and meets 2 times a week (normally Tues/Thurs), that's 1.5 hrs per day.

For a college or university that operates on a regular two semester academic year, one credit is equivalent to one hour, referred to as a credit-hour. If a course is three credits, that means the student is required to have three hours of class contact time per week. How the time is scheduled is up to the institution.
