I don't like to flip BBQ sauce all over the place, so I grill first, coat later. For 'Leg Quarters', I grill about 25 minutes, then flip 'em over. Grill 'em another 15 minutes, then coat w/BBQ sauce. Grill another 10 and they're done.

HOWEVER (!) -It's ALWAYS a good idea to pierce the thick part of the thigh and/or drumstick with a fork or a knife JUST BEFORE coating with the sauce. You are looking for clear juices to run out.

You must check the internal temperature to be sure. Take one piece of chicken out of the pan or oven and use an instant read thermometer stuck in the thickest part of the meat, but not touching the bone. The USDA web site says that a chicken breast should reach 165 degrees in order to be safely cooked. You can go to their web site for more information about cooking foods properly.
