How long to get a divorce in Costa Rica if you live in Costa Rica?
Answer:
generally speaking Costa Rica does not grant divorces prior to the third anniversary of your wedding date. there are exceptions but they are very difficult to pursue. the overwhelming majority of people who are married and seek a divorce usually wait until the 3 year mark to begin divorce proceedings. in the meantime you can have an attorney file for legal separation on your behalf. this isn't the same as being divorced but it does state for the record the date that the marriage stopped functioning normally.
Actually, the laws have changed recently regarding divorce. You no longer have to wait three years. You can divorced anytime, and the process, like the states takes about six months.
