i don't know how long, but i can tell you that my horse bowed his tendon racing, and we only found out last month that it caused scar tissue in his shoulder from leaning on his other leg so much. it hardly effects him, but sometimes he imagines that he's done it again, he's not too confident on that side.

Depends how serious the damage is, for example i had a tendon in my finger damaged by 80% and then 4 more (on other fingers) that completely snapped. I had to get surgery to repair them, then 4 weeks in a cast with planned exercises 5 times day and then two weeks after surgery, when i got the stitches out, i had to put moisturiser hand cream. 4 weeks after surgery i went back to doing light activities (like buttoning up a shirt). 6 weeks later after surgery i could lift light weights (up to 5 kilos) and then 3 months after surgery i was back to normal.

However i heard that sometimes tendons don't heal at fully, even after surgery the fingers might not regain the ability to bend completely and may still feel stiff after several months and that sensation could be permanent. Its not actually a problem with the muscle that doesn't allow it to bend it's got more to do with the nerves connecting in the muscle.

Strains in tendons can take a long time to heal, longer than bones, because they have less of a blood supply. Bones generally heal in 4-6 weeks. Tendons can take longer though you will regain use of the hand much sooner, usually a week or two. The full healing takes much longer, that is why they recommend immobilization so you don't use it and re-injure it before it has had a chance to start healing properly.

Why do ligaments and tendons recover slowly if injured?

Ligaments are said to be hypovascular structures, which in plain English means they do not receive much blood. The slow healing of ligaments is thought to be secondary to this characteristic. In the words of former pro football player and later actor Alex Karras: "Ligaments don't heal". That is a bit of an overstatement - but not much.

Since the ligament was torn, the blood vessels in your ligament were also damaged. Cells are what heals injuries, and with less blood, it will take longer to heal.
