In more temperate climates, woolly bears become moths only months after hatching. In the Arctic, where food is less prominent, some of them hibernate through up to fourteen winters before becoming a moth. Moths only have a few days to find a mate before dying.

It depends on what type of caterpillar you are talking about. For instance, the woolly bear (or worm) stays in its cocoon from an average of ten to fifteen days. There are other ranges, of course, but that is because woolly bear caterpillars are so common throughout the world. A peculiar thing about the woolly bear is the legend that some of them (banded woolly bears) can predict what type of weather winter will bring by a patch of red [fur] on the caterpillars middle. If there is a long band, the weather will be severe. If there is a short band, the weather will be calm.
