As an attorney Lincoln worked in the Eighth Judicial Circuit in Illinois, and twice a year (usually in the spring and fall) he'd spend nearly three months traveling by horseback and stopping at each country seat for a brief court term (usually two days to a week in duration.) Much of the time Lincoln argued cases in front of judge David Davis who traveled the circuit with him. When Davis was ill or had other personal business to take care of, he usually asked Lincoln to act as judge for a few days. This was irregular and was altogether without statutory sanction; thus Lincoln would preside the trial if all parties consented. At least two of "Judge Lincoln's cases were reversed by Illinois Supreme Court. But usually Lincoln's integrity and character were so outstanding as to inspire confidence in his findings and weight to his judgments. HE WASNT A LAWYER!

1849-1851
He was licensed in Illinois to practice law in September 1836. He had also entered politics, winning a seat in the Illinois State Assembly in 1836. He continued his career as a Lawyer, traveling throughout the 8th Circuit while involved with state politics, in the Assembly, and with the Whig party.

Lincoln left and re-entered politics but consistently practiced law until 1858, stopping briefly in 1856, when he ran for Senator for Illinois for the first time. 1858, was the last year he actually worked as a Lawyer, winning an acquittal for his client, who was on trial for murder, by using an Almanac.
