There have been estimated at least 109 F5 tornadoes in the U.S. Since the introduction of the Enhanced Fujita scale there have been 9 EF5 tornadoes, which is essentially equivalent to an F5.

Note that this number should be taken with a grain of salt as it can be difficult to distinguish between F4 and F5 damage, especially in records that must be evaluated based on historical accounts.

There is no definite number and some years go without having a single F5. In the past 65 years there have been 59 F5/EF5 tornadoes, so the overall average is less than one per year.

F5 activity is rather sporadic. In 1974 there were 6 F5 tornadoes, while not a single F5 tornado was recorded between May 3, 1999 and May 4, 2007. The most recent F5/EF5 tornado was on May 20, 2013.

On average there are about five F5 (now EF5) tornadoes in a six year period. However, this is not on a regular basis.

For example there were six F5 tornadoes in the year 1974. By contrast, after the F5 on May 3 1999 there was not another F5 or EF5 tornado until May 4, 2007, eight years later.

There were 6 EF5 tornadoes in the U.S. in 2011 which which is the second highest number for F5/EF5 tornadoes in one year, just behind the record of 7 set in 1974. EF5 is essentially the same rating as F5, only on an enhanced scale.

How many thunderstorms occur each day?

The U.S. averages about 1200 tornadoes per year which works out to an average of about 3.3 per day. It is far from an even distribution, though. First, tornadoes are far more common in spring and summer than in the winter and activity varies from year to year. Second, tornadoes often occur in outbreaks with major events sometimes producing several dozen tornadoes in a single day. Between outbreaks there can be periods of little to no tornado activity. The largest number of tornadoes observed in 24 hours is 208 set on April 27, 2011. Accurate global statistics are not available as many countries do not keep records of tornadoes.

Though that is extremely significant, you will often hear larger numbers (200+) reported in the media due to the way tornadoes are tallied. Reports of tornadoes are listed by the Storm Prediction Center first, but many of these reports refer to the same tornado. So there may have been 250 reports, but only 100 separate tornadoes.
