Answer
At the end of WW2 Poland's borders were pushed westwards into areas like East Prussia, Pomerania and Silesia - areas that were populated by Germans and that didn't have Polish minorities. The Germans were expelled. The German-speaking population of Czechoslovakia was expelled. Large numbers of ethnic Germans were expelled from all the Eastern Bloc countries. Expelling people, especially on this scale, involves hardship and deaths. The (German) League of Expellees claims that 11.7 million Germans were expelled and that about 2 million died in the process. This second figure (of about 1 in 6) seems high to me, but that doesn't alter the fact that many perished.
In addition, many German soldiers died in Soviet capitivity after WW2, and an estimated 5,000-9,000 in American captivity in Europe.
I'll see if I can recommend reading, but much of the literature is NOT reliable and some of it is propaganda.
