How many Iranian people live in Australia and why?

To answer this question we first need to define what Iranian means. For example do we consider Australian citizens who were born in Iran as Iranians? How about their Australian born children who are the second generation of Iranian immigrants.

In Australia, 34561 people speak Persian language. However Persian language is not exclusively spoken by Iranians. Moreover, Persian is not the only language which Iranians speak. Many Iranians may name English, Turkish or Arabic as their first language. About 70.8 per cent of Persian speaking people were born in Iran and 13.4 per cent of them were born in Australia. 96.6 per cent of Persian speakers' parents were born overseas (out of Australia). 65.4per cent of Persian speakers are Australian citizens and 10.0 percent of those who name Persian as their first language were born in Afghanistan.
