How many MB of memory do you need for a good running computer? In: Computer Buying |
[Edit] |
Answer
There are a lot of variables to consider when discussing memory needs.
With computer memory more is almost always better. Most desktop computers today allow up to 4 GB on the motherboard. Laptops about the same.
Operating Systems will dictate much of what your needs will be.
Microsoft recommends 512 MB for the new Vista Home Operating system. If you want to be able to actually use Vista I recommend 2GB or better.
Microsoft recommends 128 MB for XP Home / Professional. With only this much memory your computer will be a big paperweight. At least 1 GB of memory will make XP usable.
Many distributions of Linux can run on a system with very little memory, yet most require a video card with at least 32 MB on board.
If you plan on playing any of the new High Res computer video games. Pack the computer with as much memory as you can afford. And a video card with lots of "onboard" memory will be helpful as well.
My number rules is.
If you can't afford oodles of memory at time of you purchase the computer, remember you can always upgrade later...and the chances are good that the price will have dropped some saving ya a little money!
Answer
he or she is right... Stay away from new PCs with under 1 GB, because 99.9999% of them have Vista.
Or, go ahead and buy them and do yourself a favor and remove Windows, put Linux on.
After using Linux for 7 yrs, I will never return to Windows
Answer
A general rule of thumb is more memory the better. Sometimes it will be cheaper to buy a computer with a minuscule amount of memory, then upgrade it from ebay or crucial. most times you can solve these problems with a google search.
If you buy a mac, 1-2 gigs is pretty good. for the most part, it won't make a huge difference unless you run multiple applications at once
