New York City has blocks of two different sizes, 10 and 20 blocks per mile.

Blocks between numbered streets, between 38th Street and 42nd Street for example, are shorter and are 20 blocks to the mile. Blocks between Avenues, as between 7th Avenue and 6th Avenue for example, are longer and are 10 blocks to the mile.

Answer

Avenue blocks come in all different sizes. In many places, particularly the Upper West Side, the avenue blocks can be nearly half a mile long.

It may well be true that in some neighborhoods, 10 avenue blocks equals a mile. But that is a bit misleading, since the size of avenue blocks is so irregular. In many places, it's really more like 3 to 5 avenue blocks to a mile.

Chicago was planned using a grid system with each grid measuring one square mile. There are about eight standard city blocks which fit within a grid although most of these blocks are further subdivided.

It depends on how long each city block is. If each block is 1mile than 46 blocks would be 46miles.

How many blocks equal a mile?

Each city may have a different number of blocks in a mile, as they independently determine the size of their city blocks. There is no universal or standard size for city blocks. To determine how many blocks are equal to one mile, you first need to find the size of the blocks in the city you are asking about, and do the math.5,280 feet equals one mile. To find out how many city blocks would equal a mile, divide 5,280 feet by the number of feet in a block in the city in question. For example, the blocks in Tucson, Arizona are 400 feet long. Diving 5,280 by 400 means that 13.2 blocks would equal 1 mile.Another example, there are long blocks from east to west and short blocks from north to south in Manhattan. There are 20 short blocks in one mile.Depending upon where you are, there are approximately 20 city blocks to one mile.
