As of August 27, 2011, there have been a total of 71 active duty Navy fatalities from the Afghan War (including hostile fire/non-hostile circumstances (crashes, accidents, etc.). A third of those were from the recent loss of a Chinook helo carrying SEAL Team members to rescue Rangers under hostile fire.
There have been 2 U.S. Navy Reserve members Kia in Afghanistan, one being SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy, recipient of the Medal of Honor for combat action in Afghanistan.
