The exact number of Mormons in the military is always changing, since people join and leave both organizations all the time. The number of Mormons in the United States has been somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 over the past several years, and tens of thousands more serve in the military of their countries around the world.

During the cold war, the US averaged about 2 million men. During the Vietnam War, the US averaged 3 million men; after the Vietnam War in 1975, the US Military abolished the WAC's (Women's Army Corps) and WAVE's (Women Allowed to join the Navy for Emergency Service) and went to the all volunteer military. Today's all volunteer military numbers less than 2 million service members.
