66,033 are buried in France's 11 cemeteries.
The question is " How many US soldiers from World War II, are buried in France ?
World War II being the important words.
According to the American Battle Monuments Commission, that keeps the records of all U.S. Soldiers buried in countries outside the U.S., the number 30,402 is the total of U.S. soldiers from WW II, buried in cemeteries in France , under ABMC management. They have an additional 3,217 names of missing, and 24 unknown from WW II, listed by cemetery, in France. This commission has been in operation since 1923, and is an agency of the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. It submits an annual report to the General Accounting Office. The numbers were listed in the Fiscal Year 2010 annual report.
People submitting various numbers would do well to use this data-base when appropriate. I saw the 66,033 number, quoted as having been received in a chain letter, in more than one place.
The American Battle Monuments Commission has accurate listings of worldwide cemeteries, for the military, and the wars that created them . If soldiers from more than one war are interred in a particular cemetery, the numbers are given for each war.
This is not simply an armchair, number crunching, organization. They maintain these cemeteries with mostly American employees. This includes all the onsite activities that go on. Grass mowing, shrubbery planting, building maintenance, painting, as well as, taking visitors to the exact burial site of the person they desire to locate.
I have never been employed by this commission, but was determined to find accurate sources. Feel free to disagree, but be specific about which war, or a combination of wars you are listing facts for, and provide sources.
