Best Answer

very nearly 18

Care to try for exactly 18?

There are two versions of the acre, both of which are equal to themselves (obviously) and both of which measure 1/8 mi. (660 ft.) by 1/80 mi. ( (66 ft.) or 1/640 sq. mi.

The only variance is whether the U.S. survey or international foot (U.S. survey foot is very very slightly larger than the international 1959 standard of 304.8mm) is used to measure.

Most U.S. states use the U.S. survey acre, whereas the UK, former commonwealth nations tend to use the acre based on the 304.8mm foot.

The differences are incredibly slight, less than a square foot's difference per SQUARE MILE (640 acres), so it is silly to even consider this measurement difference unless the area of an entire continent, or some other massive area is being calculated. Due to the vast land area of North America, this is probably why the U.S> geological survey retained the original measure of the foot instead of having to redraw all U.S. maps in 1959 when the U.S. conformed to the international foot standard.
