Amps Required to Charge a "Car" Battery

It depends on the condition ["health"] of the battery, the charge condition ["charge state"] of the battery, and how fast or slow one wants a full charge to take.

For example, an almost fully charged auto battery can be brought up to full charge with a one Ampere [1 Amp] "Trickle Charger" within 24 hours or less.

On the other hand, a 1 Amp Trickle Charger WILL NOT charge a battery which is 90% discharged.

Depending on many variables, a 10 Amp charger will restore a 99% discharged auto battery [in good health/condition] to full power in about 3 to 5 hours, based on my personal experience. For years, I've used so-called "automatic" chargers that either turn off, or "throttle-back" on the Amperage to a trickle charge rate, when the battery has fully charged. That's why I'm not sure of the exact time to fully charge.

How many amps can I charge a 12v battery?

You can safely charge it with a 15 amp charger. You can also charge it with a 1 amp charger it will just take longer. Do not overcharge the battery.

Do you take the fill caps on your battery off when you charge it at the rate of 2 amps?

no way.

How long does it take to charge a 12 volt battery at 1.5 amps?

8 hours

How Long To Charge 12 Volt Battery?

On a car battery? on most battery chargers there are three settings trickle or something around 2 amps which will take a good 12 hours to 24 hours a second for small batteries which is a few more amps that could take anywhere from 6 to 12 hours and a fast charge which is even more amps and anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours, also some chargers have a start option which cranks over a car so the alternator will charge it correctly, the trickle charge is the best charge but will take the longest

Can a 40 amps jump start be used as battery charger?

Yes, but you cannot leave it for long periods of time or the battery will overheat and boil acid away. Normally a fully dead battery to a full battery should take about 2 hours to charge up at 40 amps.

Can 5v charger charge a 7.5v battery?

yes it just takes longer to charge, but check how much Amps (A) your charger gives out and how much Amps your battery can take if the battery has lower Amperage (A), don't do it, otherwise you're fine. <<>> No, the charging unit has to have a higher output that the battery voltage that it is charging. For example, on a 12 volt car battery the charging rate is 13.5 volts.

When using a battery charger that is the charge rate in amps for starting a car?

It isn't adviseable to use a battery charger to jump start a car unless the charger has a jump selection on it. Most newer models do have this function. The best thing to do, whether your charger has the jump function or not, is to take out the battery and put it on a trickle charge - usually about 2 amps, until the battery itself is fully charged.

What charger do you need for a 24 volt battery?

The formula you are looking for is I = W/E. Amps = Watts/Volts. 300/24 = 12.5 amps. A good charger with an output of 15 amps will do the job nicely. The time that it will take to charge the battery will depend on the amp/hrs of the connected battery and the state of discharge that the battery is in when charging starts.

Can a small 12 volt 200 watt electric motor run safely off a deep cycle battery whilst the battery is being charged at say at 20 amperes?

Should be OK. If the motor draw is 200 watts, and the charge current is 20 amps, you've got (12 x 20) = 240 watts in and only 200 out. The battery will charge at a rate of (40/12) about 3.3 amps, so be aware that (i) the battery will take longer to charge than if the motor wasn't running, and (ii) once you stop the motor, the charge current is the whole 20 amps and you'd need to be sure that the battery won't overcharge.

Can you use a different brand charger with a lower voltage and a hr?

Lower voltage, no, lower amps, yes. I will just take longer to charge the battery.

Can you use a 12 amp charger to charge 6 amp battery?

You can charge a 12 volt battery with a 6 AMP charger. The amount of amps put out by the charger is actually the rate which the power flows out from the charger, not the amount of volts it will charge. Volts and Amps are two different things. You can't charge up a 12 volt battery all the way, using a 6 volt charger. You can charge a 12 volt battery with a 12 volt charger rated at '6 amps'. It will charge the battery faster than a 2 amp charger will, but it will take longer than using a 12 amp charger. You probably don't want to use anything higher than a 12-16 amp charger for charging a 12 volt battery. Some chargers are equipped with a 60amp boost charge that is used for starting the vehicle, without having much of a charge in the battery. You DO NOT want to attempt charging a battery with it set to a 60amp boost charge. That is for starting vehicles only and could damage your battery. Keep in mind that the lower the amps are, that you use to charge the battery (1-2amps), will result in the charge lasting longer without recharging it, than if it was charged up at a higher setting (12-16amps).

When a cars battery is discharged due to an extended time car is not started what is the best procedure to charge the battery?

Many times a battery that was allowed to "go dead" by sitting will end up being non-usable. If you have access to a simple charger, connect it to the battery to see if it will take a charge. If not, don't fight it, just remove the battery, take it to an auto parts retailer and see if they can charge it. If not, just replace the battery. Charge it with a slow charger of around 10 amps. Make sure to use an automatic charger as not to over charge. Clean the post connections, and if if is not a maintenance free battery make sure the cells are not dry. Only add distilled water.
