One. The sodium atom is an atom. Atoms are not composed of other atoms, but rather smaller parts known as protons, neutrons and electrons; all of which except the electrons may be broken down in to smaller parts known as quarks.

The element sodium does not form molecules unless it has reacted with some other element. Every continuous piece of pure sodium contains delocalized electrons and thus has some of the characteristics of a more conventional molecule. For stoichiometric calculations, each sodium atom is regarded as a molecule compared with the smallest unit of a genuinely molecular substance such as methane, but the numerical value is more properly called a gram Atomic Mass or gram formula unit rather than a molecular mas or weight.
