The population is likely estimated as there are about more than 1000 Black panthers in wild.
They are more common in Asia than in the African continent.
In Asia most of them can be found in the Malayan Peninsula.
Leopards are secretive animals, and to give an accurate number of black specimens would be impossible. However, black leopards seem to occur more frequently in Asia than in Africa. It is hard to say exact numbers in the wild but many cubs don't survive, in 2008 there were 15 black leopards in captivity, all monitored.
Panther is a generic term that applies to animals from the genus panthera. It includes:Lion: Panthera leo
Tiger: Panthera tigris
Leopard: Panthera pardus
Snow leopard: Panthera uncia
Jaguar: Panthera onca
Both the leopard and the jaguar occasionally produce melanistic (black) individuals which are collectively called black panthers.
As these animals live in large areas of virtually unexplored territory, there is no figure available on their populations.
There are many thousands, when you consider that the word "panther" encompasses pumas, leopards, and jaguars.
No one knows for sure, because they are only black leopards and jaguars. The Black Panther is not a species.
