A prolific author, Tortilla Flats was his first critical success. His California novels are more famous: The Dubious Battle, Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday preceeded his war correspondent period. East of Eden and Travels with Charley and his final in 1961 was the Winter of Our Discontent. In 1962 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
