The answer depends on a number of factors.

Firstly the minimum number of calories needed by a healthy adult to survive is about 1,000 per day. If you consume fewer calories than this your body wil begin to l suffer from starvation.

The normal range for a healthy adult male is about 1,800 to 2,500 depending on activity level. The normal range for a healthy adult female is about 1,500 - 2,000 depending on activity.

If you are trying to loose weight, and you have excess fat you can reduce your caloric intake below 1,000 per day while you burn away the stored energy. During extremely strenuous activities (e.g. competing in the Tour de France, or Ultramarathon running) you might need to consume as much as 10,000 calories per day.
