The average caloric intake for adult males is 2,500 calories a day. However, the amount of calories you should eat depends on your weight, activity level and desire to lose weight.

The best way to estimate how many calories you need daily is to calculate your basal metabolic rate (BMR). Your BMR estimates how many calories your body needs to maintain its current weight. To lose weight you would need to cut calories from your diet or burn them through exercise or ideally, both.

How Calculate BMR for a Man66 + (6.3 x weight in pounds) + (12.9 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)

Next, incorporate your amount of activity.

  • If you are sedentary : BMR x 20%
  • If you are lightly active: BMR x 30%
  • If you are moderately active: BMR x 40%
  • If you are very active: BMR x 50%
  • If you are extra active: BMR x 60%

Add this number to your BMR.

The result of this formula will be the number of calories you can eat every day and maintain your current weight. In order to lose weight, you'll need to take in fewer calories than this result.
