As of August 27, 2011 here are the Primary and Secondary categories, 144 in total, without supervisors:
I am sorry if this list has a few errors or duplicates, I did my best to provide a complete list.
It depends how much you are active in each category, it can go to every category. Only three.
There are 22 Main Categories on WikiAnswers.
To have a category, there must be a certain number of questions belonging to that category, usually a minimum of 100. However, many categories are not 'stand alone' subjects and could be properly addressed in another category. As new subjects emerge Answers.com reviews the categories and adds to them.
A Senior Supervisor is not like a Senior Citizen where once a certain age, they are deemed into that category. A Senior Supervisor is a Super that has made many valuable contributions to WikiAnswers and has been around for a while on the site.
There can actually be a multiple number of supervisors in one category, I've once seen 4 supervisors in one category! But it depends on how busy the category is, sometimes and usually the category may need more then just 1 supervisor for one category of interest. So there are usually a multiple number of supervisors, supervising a category. But usually less than 5, but hey, the more the merrier!
A subcategory is usually formed when there are a significant number of questions under a particular subcategory of a category. In your case, if there are atleast a 50 or so questions under any of the sub categories in philosophy you can ask the supervisor of the category for a new subcategory.
A supervisor can take as many categories under his or her wing according to how capable the supervisor feels about handling them. The sky's the limit.(See the Related question.)
There are many, many categories that can be used, including many "catch-all" categories for questions that for various reasons should be removed. Go to any question that you have asked and click on [Edit categories]. You can explore the list. If you click on the triangles to the left of some entries you will see a pull-down of more categories.
There are currently 31 Senior Supervisors in the Super community. You can find their names attached to the top level categories on the category tree.
A Supervisor does many things on WikiAnswers. A Supervisor will hunt for vandalism, and warn those who need to be warned. If necessary, a Supervisor will block someone, either temporarily or permanently, for doing anything against WikiAnswers' rules. That is the main part of a Supervisor job, but they also help other contributors, other supervisors, and make sure no disputes arise to where they have to be taken to a higher level. There are floating supervisor who do not supervise a specific category. They just float around the site cleaning up questions, blocking vandals, merging questions, asking questions, answering questions, participating in the Supervisors Forum etc. A category supervisor basically does the same thing but they try to focus all of their work in the categories that have been appointed to supervise.Supervisors have additional Super Powers (eg. protect a question, trash a question which does not add to the value of WA, feature a question etc.) and also have access to the "backstage" of WikiAnswers - the stylebook, their own personal email, and the supervisors' forum. They look over categories of interest or "hover" over each randomly, and are able to feature, protect, merge, trash, update etc. questions they find. They can also warn, block etc. other users who are doing inappropriate spam and damage to WikiAnswers. Please see the related question: "How do you become a Supervisor on WikiAnswers?"Supervisors can:# Monitor activities in the site# Revert/Remove wrong answers# Warn users posting answers that do not comply with the website rules# Block users who keep posting nonsense after repeated warnings# And more!
WikiAnswers has a category called 'Most Amusing Questions Ever Asked on WikiAnswers'. The category is home to many amusing questions that also goes under the category strange, unusual, weird, etc. Below is the link to the category.
There are more than 8,600 categories and subcategories - and rising every day.
