ANSWER As long as you take care of them accordingly (i.e. finding them enough food, providing each cat with a place to sleep, etc.), then you can probably have as many cats as you like. Once I saw a family that had thirty cats and they were doing just fine.

There does not appear to be a state-wide pet limit law in New Jersey. There are local ordinances in some places, which vary from one municipality to another. Limit laws are generally unnecessary and ineffective, as there is no particular number that applies in all cases; one cat can be too many, if it is causing problems in the neighborhood and twenty might not even be noticeable, if they are properly housed. Nuisance laws take care of such problems much more effectively, without having to choose an arbitrary number.

As of May 2014, there does not seem to be a state wide law as to how many cats one can own. However, there are always city ordinances that one would follow. You can call your local animal shelter or human society for the laws in your city.

it typically depends on your landlord some will allow none, some five, cats will only be taken away if they are mistreated or neglected, so keep your number of cats to a manageable amount
