Kepler was married twice. By his first wife, Barbara Mueller, he had five (5) children. The first two died in infancy. Susanna (b. 1602) married Kepler's assistant, Jakob Bartsch. There were two sons, Friedrich (b. 1604) and Ludwig (b. 1607). In 1611 all three children contracted smallpox. Friedrich died of it at the age of six. That same year their mother, Barbara, contracted Hungarian Spotted Fever (now known as Rickettsia) and died in 1912.

Kepler married a second time to Susanna Ruettinger in 1613. They had six children. The first three (Margareta Regina, Katharina, and Sebald) died while they were still children. The last three [Cordula (b. 1621); Fridmar (b. 1623); and Hildebert (b. 1625)] survived into adulthood.

In total, Johannes Kepler begat eleven (11) children of whom only five (5) reached adulthood. (quite common in those days)
