Previous answerer, Lucy Meakin, was either being satirical or she couldn't grasp the concept of the story strongly past it's physical words.
Without spoiling, Of Mice and Men, is a heart-wrenching story that touches on Steinbeck's observations of the hopelessness and loss of the American dream during the Depression. Literary allusions of the Paradise Cycle in Abrahamic Religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) are constantly prevalent throughout the story. The Old Testament's stories like The Garden, The Fall, and The First Murder all had very metaphorical references in the story. Overall, the novel is more complex than just "sad", because themes such as hopelessness and the natural order of removing the weak creates a beautifully tragic story when it comes down to two friends who are literary foils and the world around them.
