A:The Book of Joshua (chapter 6) tells of the Israelites marching around the walls of Jericho seven times, but does not tell us the length of each march or how long it took. We therefore can not say from a biblical perspective how long the march was.

Archaeologists tell us that the city of Jericho was finally abandoned after an earthquake damamged the walls approximately 1550 BCE, and that there was only a small, unwalled village at the site when The Bible says the Israelites arrived. So, from a historical perspective the march did not take place. Over 80 per cent of scholars are reported to believe there was no military conquest of Canaan as described in the Bible.

The modern city of Jericho has a population of about 20,000 people and could probably be walked around in less than a day.

Just before the city was abandoned in 1550 BCE, the walls were around a kilometre long and could be walked around in perhaps fifteen minutes.

Around 1400 BCE, at the time attributed to Joshua, there was no city of Jericho and no walls left standing. The small mud-brick village on the site could be walked around in just a few minutes.

All the Israelite men of war (Joshua 6:3), which was about 600,000 (Numbers ch.26).

The width of the marching army is not stated, so the march could have taken a short time if need be.

Concerning a hiatus in Sabbath-observance, the same God who created the Shabbat and stated its sanctity, also commanded us to bring certain offerings on that day (Numbers 28). This is no different.

Numbers 26:51 tells us there were 600,000 fighting men among the Israelites who arrived at Jericho.

Joshua chapter 6 says that all the fighting men marched around the walls of Jericho once each day for six days, then seven times on the seventh day. To do this on the first six days, seven men must pass any given point point on the route every second continuously and without break for the entire 24 hours of the first day, then immediately commence the march of the second day. If all the Israelites did on the seventh day was to march around seven times, 50 men must pass any given point every second for the entire day, but the number must be vastly greater in order to allow time to invade and capture the city on the same day.

The biblical figure is unachievable, providing clear evidence that the invasion either did not take place or that the number of invading Israelites was massively exaggerated.

It has also been pointed out that, if literally true, this passage is evidence that the Sabbath was still not being observed, although the Ten Commandments were supposedly handed down years earlier.

What were two likely results of the strange marches around Jericho by Israel for seven days?

A:This is a question that takes us outside biblical tradition into the worlds of science psychology and history. The science of archaeology tells us that Jericho was abandoned around 1550 BCE, so we can say that the biblical Israelite attack is not historical. However, legends are often based on some element of truth, and so it seems to be with the story of Joshua's attack on Jericho, in which he ordered the Israelites to march around the walls of Jericho for seven days. This is apparently based on a real event, when an invading army marched around the walls of the city of Megiddo, day after day. At first, the defenders followed around on the wall, waiting for the attack to commence. When no attack took place, they simply stopped following the opposing forces around the walls. At this point, the invaders attacked, meeting little organised resistance. This real event shows the likely result of the strange marches.
