How many diferent guitars are there? |
[Edit] |
If you are asking how many different brands, makers, or what have you, the answer would be, "countless.", taking into consideration the number of custom and "homemade" guitars made.
If you are asking about types, there are two basic categories: acoustic and electric.
Under acoustic, there are:
- Renaissance and Baroque
- classical
- Portuguese
- flat top or steel string
- archtop
- Resonator
- twelve-string
- Russian
- acoustic bass
- tenor guitars
- harp guitars
- extended range
- battente
Electric guitars can have solid, semi-hollow or hollow bodies, and produce little sound without amplification.
Seven-strings were popularized in the 1980's and 1990's in part due to the release of the Ibanez Universe guitar. Other artists go a step further, by using an eight-string guitar, with two extra low strings.
Although the most common seven-string has a low B-string, Roger McGuinn (of The Byrds and Rickenbacker) uses an octave G-string paired with the regular G-string as on a twelve-string guitar, allowing him to incorporate chiming twelve-string elements in standard six-string playing.
