The United States ZIP code is five digits.

The ZIP+4 code is nine numbers.

9 numbers helps get the mail to you faster because the 5-digit ZIP code identifies a delivery zone; the extra 4 digits in a ZIP+4 pinpoints the region within the zone down to the city block.

Also, there can be several cities associated with one ZIP code because they are all within the one delivery zone. Take area code 7836: It encompasses 5 cities in Texas. Another example is 62812: it encompasses 6 cities!
