Assuming you're referring to a British shilling, it was 1/20 of a pound sterling which equates to 5 pence in current decimal pounds.

If you want to know its value to a collector, please post a new question with the coin's date.

Shilling was a unit of currency used in the United Kingdom before decimalisation.

There were 12 old pence in a shilling and 20 shillings in a Pound.

As there are now 100 new pence in a Pound it would be worth 5 new pence today.

Obsolete Shillings

The old Shilling was a sub-unit of many redundant or obsolete pre-decimal currencies, and it no longer has an "exchange rate" with any other currency.

The Shilling was used by Britain and many of the British Empire/Commonwealth countries prior to decimalisation. There were 12 Pennies in a Shilling, and 20 Shillings in a Pound.

Its conversion as a unit of currency into modern terms can only be equated to the new currencies at the time of change-over.

At the first phase of Britain's conversion to decimal currency in 1968, the Shilling converted to 5 New Pence, known as 5 Pence since 1982.

In other countries, such as Australia (1966) and New Zealand (1967), the Shilling converted to 10 cents, or 1/10th of an Australian or New Zealand Dollar.

Shillings currently in use

Several African countries including Kenya (KES), Somalia (SOS), Tanzania (TZS) and Uganda (UGX) currently use the Shilling as their major unit of currency since their respective introductions of decimal currency (100 cents = 1 Shilling). These modern decimal Shillings should not be confused with any of the many predecimal Shillings.

Valuations for Obsolete Shillings

If you want to know the "Collector" or "Numismatic" value of a coin, please post a new question including the country, the year and the denomination of your coin.

This is a complex question that can have several different answers. In the pre-decimal monetary system of Great Britain, the pound was comprised of 20 shillings and each shilling was comprised of 12 pence so a shilling was 1/20th of a pound or 12 pence. When the UK was decimalized in the early 1970s, the shilling became 5 new pence (5p).

As for the physical coins, (British) shilling coins dated 1919 or earlier are sterling silver and worth about $5-6 even in low grade for scrap silver. Of course high grade pieces and older coins may be worth more than scrap silver. Coins dated 1920-1946 are 50% silver and worth about $2-3 in low grade for scrap silver. Coins dated 1947 and later in low grade are really only worth a few cents at most because they contain no silver, however high grade or rare date coins might be worth much more.

A shilling from any of the British Commonwealth countries is not worth any Dollars.

All such coins belong to redundant or obsolete currencies and no longer have an exchange rate with any other currency. The pre-decimal Shilling ceased to exist as a unit of currency in most countries in the early 1970's.

The shilling coin was equivalent to 5 pence at the time of decimalisation in 1971. The coins continued to circulate alongside 5p coins until the latter was redesigned and made smaller in the early 1990s, at which point shillings stopped being legal tender.

An old shilling coin could be valuable as a collector's item. However you'd need to know its date and condition. Most later-date shillings (say from 1948 to 1966) are not worth more than 50 cents or so.

The British Shilling was last minted for circulation in 1966. At Britain's conversion to decimal currency in February, 1971, the Shilling coin converted to 5 New Pence in the new currency. In most other Commonwealth countries, the Shilling converted to 10 cents at decimalisation.

From a coin collectors perspective, a British Shilling coin, depending on the year, condition and method of minting, could be worth anything from a few Pounds to several thousand Pounds GBP.

Please note that since the Shilling is part of a redundant or obsolete currency, it no longer has an "exchange rate" with other currencies.
