Before birth, a fetus starts with around 2 million eggs in each ovary. Those eggs are trimmed down over time, and a girl is born with around 300,000 eggs in each ovary.
She normally releases 1 egg a month during her fertile years.
When a female fetus is born, her ovaries already contain approximately 2 million immature eggs (called oocytes). As a gril develops through childhood, the number of oocytes in her ovaries decrease until puberty, when the first mature ovum is released, at which point her ovaries contain approximately 400,000 oocytes. This turns out to be hundreds of thousands more than a woman will release in her lifetime, but evolution is taking no chances: Most women will have approximately 35 to 40 fertile years between the onset of puberty and menopause. Releasing on ovum each month, this amounts to a lifetime total of 400 to 500 ova released from a woman's ovaries.
This comes from Roger R. Hock's Human Sexuality (second edition) Chapter 9 page 326 paragraph two titled Ovulation: The Ovum's Journey
