A specific food is considered to be high in fiber if it contains 5 or more grams of fiber. The FDA recommends a daily intake of 20-30 grams of fiber (See FDA Webpage), so a high fiber diet would constitute anything in the upper portion of that range.

p.s. you can get a good idea of your cholesterol/fiber balance when your stool floats.

How many grams of fiber should you consume per day?

Women 50 and under should consume 25 grams. per day 51 and older 21 grams per day.

Men 50 and under, 38 grams per day. Men, 51 and older 30 grams per day.

Kids under 18 need 0.5g per Kg per day.

The average American takes in 15 grams of fiber. Several organizations recommend 25 - 30 grams a day. If your intake is 15 grams or less and you want to increase your fiber intake, increase it gradually. If you jump from 15 to 35 grams a day, it may cause stomach cramps.
