Best estimates put Islam at between 1 billion and 1.4 billion people. The most cited is 1.2 billion adherents. This makes Islam the second largest religion in the world with approximately 1 billion less followers than Christianity.

However, there is considerable difficulty in ascertaining the number of Muslims and as a result most measurements are inflated. Which means the number could be even far greater than 1.4 billion.
