A large number of Canadians served in different RAF squadrons at the beginning of the war. No. 1 Fighter Squadron, RCAF was the first air unit to take on the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain. Pilots from various RAF squadrons were consolidated as No.242 (Canadian) Squadron, RAF and on 30 August 1940 they had 12 kills with no losses in their first air battle.
The actual number is still debated to this day as some confusion exists over the citizenship of some pilots. The number ranges from 96 to 103, these being primarily identified as RCAF or Canadians serving in the RAF.
P/O J.L McKnight of 242 Sqn. is the most successful Canadian BoB pilot with 15 aircraft destroyed, 2 shared destroyed and 3 damaged. Sadly he went missing and presumed Kia in January 1941.

Although it is impossible to determine the number of those who past through the ranks of the major Axis militaries during WWII, their peak strength (the most people in uniform at any one time) is much easier to find and is what is listed here. All figures (unless otherwise noted) come from John Keegan's The Times Atlas of the Second World War:
Germany: 10,800,000
Japan (According to official Japanese government data): 7,889,100 (not including the vast paramilitary forces mobilized toward the end of the war)
Italy: 4,500,000
Japanese Chinese Collaborationist Army: 900,000
Rumania: 600,000
Bulgaria: 450,000
Hungary: 350,000
Manchukuo (According to S.M. Shtemenko's The Soviet General Staff at War, 1941-1945): 300,000
Finland: 250,000
Thailand: No available source, but roughly ~200,000
Czechoslovakia: 180,000
Indian National Army (Japanese collaborationist force, figure comes from Peter Fay's, The Forgotten Army: India's armed struggle for Independence 1942-1945): 40,000
Although these figures add up to nearly 26 million, many Axis countries (especially Italy, Finland, and Germany's European satellite states) achieved their peak strength (and were knocked out of the war entirely) before others could achieve theirs. It is therefore necessary to note that the most military personnel the Axis had facing the Allies at any one time probably amounted to significantly less than the aforementioned 26 million.

The Battle of Britain was between GERMANY & BRITAIN. This was part of the their "European War" and occurred nearly 1 1/2 years before the US entered the war. The U.S only supported Britain after Hitler had cancelled Operation Sealion, which involved the suppression by bombing of Great Britain. U.S forces were vital to the Normandy landings that occured after Great Britain had won the Battle of Britain. However, many Americans did go to England and join the RAF to fight. The US was not fighting in the war(Pearl Harbor was yet to come). There were many Americans who felt it was their duty to help England and China fight these enemies.
