Each playoff series consists of up to seven games. The first team which wins four games in a series advances to the next round. Once four games have been won, the remaining games are not played.

And , before a team can GET to the finals.............................
They play a 82 game Regular Season, that lasts from the middle of September to the following April, then they play a quarter final that is a best 5 out of 7 game series, then if they win there , they go to the semi finals, again a best 5 games out of 7 series, and IF they win there, they go to the FINALS, where they have to try to win..........You guessed it, a best 5 out of 7 series ,AGAIN.
That is why the Stanley Cup is the HARDEST pro sports cup to win, barr none.
With 30 teams in the NHL, just getting to the playoffs is a signiicant acheivement. To win the Stanley Cup is the top of the sporting world.
