How many grams are equal to one cubic centimeter? |
Grams Equal to One Cubic Centimeter
This depends. A "gram" is a measure of mass, while a "cc" is a measure of volume. For example; 1cc of lead has more mass than 1cc water. However, the metric standard of measurements is such that 1 cubic centimeter of water (under certain, normal circumstances) is EXACTLY equal to 1 gram. The metric system is based on water as a measuring tool (especially temperature).
[The above is misleading. While 1 gramme was historically equivalent to 1cc of water at STP, this is no longer true. Almost all SI units are now defined in terms of fundamental physical processes. So 1 m is now the length equal to 1 650763,73 wavelengths in vacuum of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the levels 2 p10 and 5 d5, of the krypton-86 atom. The exception is the kilogram which is the mass of the international prototype of the kilogram recognised by the CGPM and in the custody of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures, Sevres. What this means is that 1cc of water at STP has mass 0.9998395g.]
