It all depends on the dog and sometimes breed, usually every 6 months to one year, they go into a heat cycle. After the birth of puppies, some bitches go into a small cycle and they should NOT be breed during this cycle, it is a natural cleansing process.

Ethically, they should only be breed every other cycle or better yet, once every two years if they go every 6 mo.

You should not attempt to breed from a dog before her third heat cycle as it can be damaging to young females. You should also not allow the dog to have more than two or three litters in her lifetime.
