There have been 9 manned missions to the moon. The 24 men who traveled there are: Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin; Bill Anders; Neil Armstrong; Alan Bean; Frank Borman; Eugene Cernan; Michael Collins; Charles "Pete" Conrad, Jr.; Charles Duke, Jr.; Ronald Evans; Richard Gordon, Jr.; Fred Haise; James Irwin; James Lovell; T. Kenneth Mattingly; Edgar Mitchell; Stuart Roosa; Harrison "Jack" Schmitt; David Scott; Alan Shepard; Thomas Stafford; John "Jack" Swigert; Alfred Worden; John Young. The number of men that have been on the moon is 12 from the 6 Apollo human landings which were between July 1969 and December 1972. There were 2 from each landing, 3 have now died so there are 9 moon walkers still alive.

Nine astronauts looped around the moon without landing, on Apollo 8 (the Christmas Eve 1968 mission), Apollo 10 (dress rehearsal for the real moon landing), and Apollo 13 (had a failure on the way to the moon, looped around, and returned to earth). There were three astronauts on each of those missions.

24 NASA astronauts have travelled to the Moon, but only 12 walked on the lunar surface.

During 6 lunar landing operations, 12 astronauts walked on the Moon :

  • Apollo 11 (1969) - Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin
  • Apollo 12 (1970) - Charles Conrad, Alan Bean
  • Apollo 14 (1971) - Alan Shepard, Edwin Mitchell
  • Apollo 15 (1971) - David Scott, James Irwin
  • Apollo 16 (1972) - John Young, Charles Duke
  • Apollo 17 (1972) - Eugene Cernan, Harrison Schmitt

Those who have orbited the Moon :

  • Apollo 8 : Frank Borman, James Lovell, William Anders
  • Apollo 10 : Thomas Stafford, John Young*, Eugene Cernan*
  • Apollo 11 (Command module) - Michael Collins
  • Apollo 12 (Command module) - Richard Gordon
  • Apollo 13 : James Lovell, Jack Swigert, Fred Haise
  • Apollo 14 (Command module) - Stuart Roosa
  • Apollo 15 (Command module) - Alfred Worden
  • Apollo 16 (Command module) - Ken Mattingly
  • Apollo 17 (Command module) - Ronald Evans

*later walked on the Moon, as above.

A total of 12 men have set foot on the moon - two astronauts each from Apollo missions 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17. Another 12 men have orbited the moon but not landed on it - all three astronauts from each of Apollo missions 8, 10, and 13 (none of which sent anyone to the surface), and the third astronaut from each of Apollo missions 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17 (in each of these, two astronauts went to the surface in the lunar module while one stayed behind in orbit in the command module). The number who orbited but did not land is only 12 instead of 15 because one astronaut orbited the moon twice (Lovell in Apollo missions 8 and 13), while two astonauts orbited the moon once and landed on it once (Young and Cernan both orbited in Apollo 10; Young landed in Apollo 16 and Cernan landed in Apollo 17). Apollo 8 and 10 were practice runs for Apollo 11, the first to land on the moon. Apollo 8 simply orbited the moon without a lunar lander, as a test of communications and maneuvering. Apollo 10 was a dress rehearsal for Apollo 11 - two astronauts entered the lunar module, separated from the command module and descended toward the surface of the moon, but did not land on it. They then returned to the command module for the trip home. Apollo 13 was intended to land on the moon, but suffered a catastrophic equipment failure and was forced to return to Earth after swinging around the moon once.
