Number of Swimming Lanes
As far as i remember, there are 8 lanes in an olympic-sized pool. for more info, check out http://www.smh.com.au/olympics/swimming/about/index.html from the 2004 athens olympics.
The definition of an Olympic size swimming pool is 8 lanes, 2.5 meters wide with a 2.5 meter space on each side. So, for practical purposes, there are 10 useable lanes, however, only 8 lanes are used for racing. Often you will see advertising banners in each of the outside unused lanes.
