According to World Almanac & Book of Facts 2007: The official languages of India are Hindi, English, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Malayalam, Kannada, Oriya, Punjabi, Assamese, Kashmiri, Sindhi, and Sanskrit. Popular in the north but not considered official: Hindustani, a mix of Hindi and Urdu.
Who is this saying that India has 18 national languages? Indian national language is Hindi. The spoken languages in Indai are 347.
A Small Correction:
If you can see the Indian Currency Note, the Amount in words shall be printed in 18 languages, SO THEY ARE ALL INDIAN NATIONAL LANGUAGES.
