According to The United Nations website there are currently (2011) 193 member states in the UN. In addition there are two non-member states with permanent observer status: The Holy See (Vatican) and Palestine.

The international organization was founded by representatives of 51 countries immediately after World War II, on October 24, 1965. The goal of the group was to maintain international peace and security, work together to solve difficult human problems and develop friendly relations among nations. Aside from its peacekeeping activities, the UN initiates and manages 30 affiliated organizations, known as the UN system. On the organization's agenda are topics touching on gender equality, environmental responsibility, the battle against poverty and disease, drug trafficking and terrorism.
