There be more than 25 muscles in the hand;; there are 26 bones that make up the hand which include 19 in the fingers and 8 in the wrist.Edit: There are no muscles in the fingers. The fingers are moved by muscles in the palm and the forearm. Note that the question didn't ask about bones. It asked how many muscles are in the fingers. Please read the question before answering.

The muscles that act on the second through fourth digits are:

  • extensor digitorum
  • extensor indicus
  • extensor digiti minimi
  • flexor digitorum superficialis
  • flexor digitorum profundus

The ones that act on the thumb and index finger are:

  • flexor pollicis longus
  • extensor pollicis longus
  • extensor pollicis brevis
  • abductor pollicis longus

The ones that only act on the fingers include:

  • thenar muscles
  • adductor pollicis
  • hypothenar muscles
  • lumbricles
  • dorsal interosse
  • palmar interossei

Then there are the ones most unique to humans, the opponens digiti minimi and the opponens hallucis.

The contraction and extention of muscles manipulate the wrist, hands and fingers. Anterior muscles cause the hand and fingers to flex or bend, whilst the posterior muscles extend or lengthen the hand and fingers. the instrinsic muscles located in the palm of the hand provide further movement, which assist in further movement of the fingers.

The thumb plays a very important role in the efficient working of our hand. Only when the thumb is damaged and unalble to be used do we realise just how much we need it, for picking objects up, holding objects or performing everyday tasks.

There are several problems that occur in the hands, which prevent complete movement and/or pain in the hands and arms.
