A:There are between 80 and 100 New Testament passages that either explicitly quote the Psalms or are taken direct from them. The actual count is even greater, as Matthew, Luke and John are based on Mark and as a result frequently use Mark's quotations from the Psalms.

In just one short passage of Mark, while Jesus suffered on the cross:

  • Mark 15:29 (Matthew 27:39; Luke 23:35) is an adaptation of Psalm 22:7-8.
  • Mark 15:34 (followed by Matthew 27:46; contradicted by Luke and John), has the last words of Jesus, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" from Psalm 22:1.
  • Mark 15:36 (Matthew 27:34,48; Luke 23:36; John 19:28, 29) is from Psalm 69:21.

How many times did Jesus quote isaiah?

Jesus quoted Isaiah 8 times.

What Old Testament prophet is quoted most in the New Testament?

Isaiah is quoted most in the New Testament and particularly Isaiah 53. While at first guess many would choose Isaiah...Isaiah might be the most quoted but not the most mentioned. Christ and the Apostles made frequent reference to Elijah. No other prophet is mentioned so frequently in the New Testament as Elijah. He occupies a highly significant place in the history of redemption. Also, since Elijah's ministry was limited to the kingdom of Israel, you will not find any accounts of Elijah in the Chronicles.

How many Old Testament verses are quoted in the Gospels?

Depending upon who you read has done the counting, there are between 600 and 3,000 direct quotes, parphrases, allegories to the Old Testament Scripture in the Gospels and other writings of the New Testament. The Book of Isaiah is the most quoted and is sometimes referred to as the 'Little Bible.'

What part of the Bible do Christians get from the Hebrew Bible?

Primarily the Old Testament but many fail to understand that the New Testament is a continuation of the Old with about 20% of the Old directly quoted or indirectly referred to - Isaiah for instance.

How many times did jesus refer to isaiah?

Suffice it to say that there are dozens of references or direct quotes from Isaiah and of all the Books of the Old Testament, Isaiah is 2nd only to the Psalms.More importantly, Isaiah is called the 'Little Bible' due to the frequency of its verses being used in the New Testament. But the main point here is, Jesus became the fulfillment of Isaiah's messianic prophecies.

Where is mentioned the word Old Testament in the Bible?

Depending on who is doing the counting, there are between 600 and 3,000 direct quotes, references, allegories to the Old Testament. Jesus Himself, quoted from it about 100 times. The most quoted book of Scripture is Isaiah, often referred to as the 'Little Bible.'The Old Testament is frequently used in the New Testament. Its authors wanted the New Testament to be seen as the fulfilment of the Old Testament and Christianity as the natural successor to Second Temple Judaism.

What percentage of the Bible is the New Testament?

It would be fair to say the Old Testament is about 80% of the Bible. One must consider the length of Psalms and others being larger than any New Testament Book. The Gospels quote from the Old Testament nearly 700 times with the Book of Isaiah being referred to as the 'Little Bible.' So the New Testament represents about 20% of the Bible pages. That being said, many say the Law of Moses is done away with. But if they realized it was quoted nearly 250 times in the New Testament, even by Jesus Himself, they might think differently.

How many books from the Old Testament did Christ quote from?

How many times is Old Testament mentioned in the New Testament?

Though direct references to Old Testament passages would have an exact number (I'm afraid I don't know it exactly), it was common for some phrases to be easily recognized among well studied Jewish people, so just because it is not expressly quoted to be from Isaiah, etc, doesn't mean the audience at the time would not have understood it to be an allusion to a well known Old Testament passage. Christians believe that the entire Old Testament is pointing to the work of Christ in the New Testament, and the whole of the New Testament after Christ's sacrifice to atone for sin on the cross, reveals the pictures contained in the Old Testament's rituals and sacrifices. Because of this powerful interrelation, it would be hard to limit this answer to an exact number.Answer:An index in the Jewish New Testament catalogs 695 separate quotations from the books of the Old Testament in the New (Jewish New Testament Publications, Jerusalem, 1989). There are many other passages where the Old Testament is referred to , as in cases where an Old Testament figure is mentioned, but no specific scripture is quoted. Depending on which scholar's work you examine, the number of quotations and references in the New Testament to the Old may be as high as 4,105(Roger Nicole, The Expositor's Bible Commentary , Zondervan, Grand Rapids, 1979, Vol. I, p. 617). The Book of Isaiah is most often quoted and is called by many 'the Little Bible.'Answer: The Old Testament is mentioned once: 2 Corinthians 3:14-Sharon G
