How many people are diagnosed with mental illness in US?

About one in every four adults in the US is diagnosed with a mental illness. Some may not be as serious as others however. Its approximately 26.2% total of the US population over age 18 to have any sort of mental illness. However for serious mental illness the number is drastically lower. It is about one in every seventeen adults or approximately 6%. Mental Disorders are also the leading cause of disability here in the US and also in Canada. In addition, about 45% of those with mental disorders also has meet a criteria for a second mental illness.
