What is Club Penguin all about?

Club Penguin is an interactive multiplayer game where you play as a penguin on an snow-covered island. You can make friends, purchase clothes, decorate your igloo, buy puffles (which are pets in Club Penguin), go to parties, and much more! Club Penguin membership is advised to have more fun:)

There are several fun minigames in Club Penguin, which you can earn coins from and buy items for your penguin and your igloo. Cart Surfer, Card-Jitsu, and Catchin' Waves are my favorites. If you're up to the task, you might want to apply as a tour guide when you know more about the game. And if you're lucky enough, you may be invited to join a special group of penguins who watch over Club Penguin and help keep the island safe.

Each player starts by choosing a penguin, giving it an identity, and then exploring Club Penguin. They can interact with other penguins by chatting, playing games, sending greeting cards, or using emotes (emotion icons) and using a set of predefined actions. By playing games, players earn virtual coins which they can eventually use to buy clothing and accessories for their penguin or furniture for their igloo.

Why did you create Club Penguin?

Chatting and gaming are the most popular online activities for children, yet most products are geared to older teens and adults. As parents of young children we wanted to create a fun online world we'd be comfortable letting our own kids visit.

Does it cost anything to join Club Penguin?

Although anyone can enjoy Club Penguin free of charge, they won't have the same privileges as paying members, such as buying clothing or decorating their own igloo.

Memberships cost $5.95 USD per month, however, reduced rates are available with six month or one year memberships. These can be purchased online with Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, check, money order, or through numerous pay by cash options.

Personal Safety Online

To help ensure the safety of children using Club Penguin, we encourage parents to review the following precautions with them. These precautions are foundational in developing an intelligent and safe approach to using the internet, whether on Club Penguin or elsewhere:

1. Never give out personal information, such as your real name, age, location, phone number or school.

2. Never share your password with anyone except your parents. If someone else gets it, they might pretend to be you, give out your personal information or do an action that may get you into trouble.

3. Tell your parents if someone says or does something on the Internet that makes you uncomfortable, or if someone asks you for personal information.

4. Choose a username that does not reflect your real identity in any way. Avoid names that are in any way suggestive, even if they seem innocent to you.

5. Avoid chat rooms that are not monitored by moderators.

Club Penguin's Safety Measures

What personal details does Club Penguin collect, and are they safe?

Club Penguin collects only the necessary information to enable users to play the game safely -- email address to confirm, and a username. We do not use any personal or contact details for any kind of solicitation, and we do not sell any of our contact information. We have a strict Privacy Policy, and we voluntarily conform to the United States of America Department of Commerce's Safe Harbor Principles and the Canadian Code of Practice.

Chat Safely

In order to ensure the safest possible environment we created two chat options:

Ultimate Safe Chat is the perfect solution for parents seeking the ultimate in online safety. This option limits what users can say to a predefined menu of greetings, questions, and statements, as well as emotes, actions and greeting cards. When it comes to chatting, these users can only see other Ultimate Safe Chat messages.

Standard Safe Chat allows players to type their own messages to other users. Every message that is typed first goes through a sophisticated filter which blocks inappropriate words and phrases. Club Penguin's filter also breaks up words and phrases phonetically in order to decipher and catch codes or other methods players might use in an attempt to get past the system. This added component allows the filter to block attempts to communicate a phone number or other personal information.

Although the filter is continuously updated, comments that could be offensive to some players may occasionally get through. In order to limit that and further protect the security of Standard Safe Chat participants, moderators monitor what's going on and receive player reports of misconduct. An "M" icon on the upper, right hand portion of the screen reminds participants a moderator is available to help. Players who engage in inappropriate behavior can be silenced or banned.

At Club Penguin, we're committed to improving the lives of children everywhere by supporting organizations doing important work on behalf of the world's youngest and most vulnerable citizens.

A portion of the proceeds from every Club Penguin membership is used to support specific local and global projects. Currently, our funds are focused on two building projects in a small Ugandan village and a children's hospital project in Romania.

Supporting these projects is our way of allowing the kids who join Club Penguin to play a role in securing a happier and healthier future for other children around the globe. It's kids helping kids, something we can all be proud of.

We are currently organizing a non profit foundation to manage the specifics of each project we undertake. This will allow us to provide you with more detailed, timely updates on projects and the difference these projects are making in many kids lives. Check back for updates.

Uganda

Club Penguin's newest Kids Helping Kids project will improve the lives of African children orphaned by AIDS and war.

Education

We are working with an organization in Uganda to help provide scholarships, project funding and learning resources to improve education opportunities for students across the country. We are planning a pilot project, "Kids Helping Kids Resource Center" to address the need for children to have FREE access to quality educational and academic resources, including but not limited to: computers, Internet access, age appropriate reading materials, and a safe place to explore.

Health Care

We have committed to build a medical facility in Fort Portal that will provide children better access to basic medical treatment. We have also helped equip a medical clinic in Rwebisengo, a village along the Ugandan border with Congo.

Romania

Home Makeover

In Fall 2006, Club Penguin partnered with an international organization and Romanian social workers to improve the home of one family in the village of Budila. The renovation has provided this family with a healthier and more stable environment.

Brasov Children's Hospital

Overcrowded hospitals and abandoned children, combined with a severe shortage of orphanages and foster care, has left a great number of Romanian children in need of help.

Club Penguin is helping one organization address this need through the Brasov Children's Hospital Project. This undertaking will provide care for abandoned children and work toward reintegrating children with their families where possible.

Renovation of hospital rooms has begun and a team of social workers and caregivers is in place to help.

Meal and Education Program

This project provides children who are having difficulty in school and combating malnutrition with extra help in several villages and towns.

Children are selected by the local school board, and given the opportunity to attend the program where they receive lunch, after class help, computer training and specialized one on one care.
